Interview

1.Where are you from?
I grew up in Warrington about 25 miles outside Manchester.

2.How did you get involved in Big Chimp?
Howell Parry asked me if I'd like to star in a film as a chimp and I thought that would be an easy part to play as I had always been able to do a pretty good impression of a chimp jumping around and shouting ooh ooh etc. Then it turned out that it was actually a gorilla :(

3.What filmmaking experience did you have before making Big Chimp?
None really.

4.What was the most difficult thing about playing Big Chimp?
Fighting with that dinosaur in the woods. It was so hot inside the costume and it was hard to see. It seemed like we spent hours filming it over and over again. I thought I was going to faint.

5.What's your favourite film featuring an ape / monkey / gorilla / chimpanzee / orangutan, and why?
The Mighty Boosh has an ape in it, doesn't it? It's a TV series, does that count?

6.Tell us a fascinating fact about yourself.
Ally McCoist (Rangers F.C. and Question of Sport) once robbed my taxi. I had booked a taxi to pick me up from the Marriot Hotel in Glasgow and while I waited for it to arrive I sat in the bar and noticed Ally McCoist in there talking to some people. When the taxi arrived the concierge called me, but Ally got in the taxi before me and it just drove off.

7.What have you been up to since filming Big Chimp in 2006?
I have recently become a parent, we had a baby girl called Dotty (Howell keeps referring to her as 'Little Chimp').

8.Any plans for the future?
Big Chimp 2?

9.What's your favourite memory from the Big Chimp shoot?
Probably filming the scene where Big Chimp meets Big Chimpess.
