Steven McCombe
(Count Von Whedon)

Where are you from?

Originally, Workington, on the west coast of Cumbria. I now live in Carlisle.

Do you have much acting and/or production (stage or TV) experience? What was your acting debut?

When I was at school, I normally helped behind the scenes, creating props and operating lights / curtains. However, I once starred as a singing lettuce and as a 'Monty Python' style cleaning lady that accidentally walked on stage during the performance, blissfully unaware there was a show happening behind her. I've performed in several Foiled productions and operated lights + sound on several concerts at the school were I work.

How did you get involved in Fluffy?

I've worked on several Foiled productions and enjoyed the experience immensely. When I heard that Henry was making a vampire flick I had to get on board.

Why did you audition for The Count?

Since I was a tot, I've always been drawn to monsters and evil characters. The Count is a fantastic character - powerful, thoroughly evil, a vampire, but with a comic element to him too! I just had to play him.

Is this your first film, or have you been involved in other films?

Nope, I've acted in 4 features so far: As the mysterious Green Man in 'Foiled', as a zombie hit-man in 'Sunday Night Zombies', as a bounty hunter and the evil Darth McMaul in 'The Jedi Who Loved Me', and as the Count in 'Fluffy'. When I was a kid I used to make and star in crazy 8mm films with my dad and brother.

Are you a Buffy fan?

Not quite yet. I've only seen a few episodes but I thoroughly enjoyed them, especially the one starring The Gentlemen. Again, I'm more drawn to the evil creatures and vampires than the beautiful people. Going from experience, I usually become hooked to a show 4 years after everyone else does! It happened with ST-TNG, The X-Files, The Simpsons and a host of other shows.

What have you gained from your involvement in Fluffy?

Several kicks to the head and a Transylvanian accent! No, seriously. I've a heap of great memories, I've met some wonderful people and I've had the opportunity to play a cool vampire with pointy teeth. I've also gained a lot of confidence too. What more could anyone ask for?

Do you have any claims to fame? (E.g. meeting famous people, appearances on TV / stage etc.)

I've been runner up in the Young Cartoonist of the Year competition, I've met some big stars including Sigourney Weaver, Hugh Grant + Liz Hurley, and was almost run down by Princess Diana in her car!

Any hobbies / obsessions? (Things you enjoy doing)

I'm a huge Star Wars fan, love tinkering around with computer graphics, enjoy drawing cartoons and adore walking by the sea.

Any amusing acting / production cockups (faux pas) - things going wrong on stage etc.?

My first acting part was as a shepherd in a Sunday school nativity play. I was supposed to kneel before the baby Jesus and then walk to one side. But my costume was so tight I couldn't get up again and so I had to walk off on my knees! The audience cracked up.

Any bizarre talents?

Apparently, a cat jumped on my mum's tummy when she was pregnant with me and scared the living hell out of her. When I get hot and bothered a red, cat's paw print appears on my chest!

Spooky.

Any amusing / mad stories about things you've done, or have happened to you?

While in America, me and my girlfriend at the time were feeling frisky and parked behind a supermarket for a passionate moment. The next thing I knew there was a squad of police cars surrounding us and a gun barrel pointing at my head - they thought we were going to break in! I had such a difficult time trying to tell the officer that my ID was in the car's boot - he didn't have a clue what a boot was and I couldn't remember the American word 'trunk'. We left the scene very embarrassed with the cops in stitches.

Any achievements you'd like to mention?

Being best man at my best friend's wedding in Toronto and having to give a speech to 150 people - very scary! Gaining my degree, living in America for a while, making some of the best friends in the world.

Any annoying habits? Are there any things that you say a lot?

I leave half empty cups around the house, walk around with a tea towel on my shoulder and can't say no to food, ever.

Favourite films?

The Star Wars saga, Bladerunner, 12 Angry Men, The Waterboy, Blue Velvet, oh, I could go on forever...

Favourite director(s) + actor(s) + actress(es)?

David Lean, Sergio Leoni, Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick + Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walkin, Adam Sandler + Dame Margaret Rutherford, Isabella Adjani, Whoopi Goldberg, again, too many favourites.

If you could meet one person dead or alive, who would it be?

Stan Laurel (& Oliver Hardy) please...

What's your favourite fluffy thing?

My parents' tom cat, Benny. He's fat, fluffy and cuddly, like a big teddy bear.
