Lightsabres

Hey, this is the Star Wars Universe - how could we not have lightsabres??  The duel scene, between Adamkin and Darth McMaul, is a key element of The Jedi Who Loved Me.  It lasts almost two minutes in the finished movie!

To start with, Steven McCombe designed two handles, which Bryan McCombe constructed from solid aluminium.  The handles were then covered in stickers to give them a real lightsabre feel.  At one end, a hole was drilled into which the blades could be inserted.

The blades themselves are broom handles, painted in bright colours to help us see them when we come to adding the glowing effect.

For the effects, Steve McCombe first generated a few test shots of the sabre "glow" in Photoshop, shown below.  After a lot of discussion on our mailing list, we decided on a green blade for Adamkin and an orange blade for McMaul.

Sabres in the final cut are a combination of a few shots done in Photoshop, and the remainder done using 3D Studio Max (the advantage of the latter method being that not every frame has to be done - it will automatically "in-between" shots where the sabre is moving fairly constantly).
